I really love family rituals, something that is special to each family.  For a while now each night at the dinner table we partake in our ritual.  Each of us has a turn to share with the family something positive that happened in their day followed by something that they are working on.  By each of us taking a turn it gives that person the opportunity to have the spotlight on them, for them to share with us what was important to them so we know what has happened in their day.  We incorporated the second part, what you are working on, to focus on an area that you may want to change or improve.  It could be something like trying to stay focused and not procrastinate, or keeping calm when things don't go right, it really is up to you. When we feel that we have achieved our goal then we set another goal to then work on.  Do you have any nightly family rituals?

  1. Hi Catherine!

We do a very similar thing, we call it 'Goods and Bads'. We tell some good things and some bad things. It usually ends up in great conversation and usually teaching the kids something. I love it. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I have been thinking starting something like this for some time now. A nightly ritual is where we sit down and read our books, or write in a journal but do something creative and quietly. To calm the mind before we sleep. I feel like pizza now. Charmaine

  6. We started a similar dinner-time conversation when the kids were little where we asked "What gave you a happy heart today" Some-days we had to work hard to stop the kids whining about negative things like tripping up in the playground or falling out with a friend. Luckily it has become easier and often humerus. My husband sometimes found it hard to put on his "Rainbows and sunshine" face after a lousy day at the office and would mutter "Right now is the best part" with gritted teeth. It became a joke where even the kids would demand he smile and make a better effort!

I love the sense of family that you can foster with simple simple traditions. It's what makes each family unique.

  7. Now I'm peckish after the pizza shot!
Think we will try your idea too.
We have a "Saturday night - out for desert ritual", one boy picks a grown up to take out for desert for some one on one time :)

  8. What a fantastic idea. Our family is a little to young for that yet, but giving Brian his turn to talk at the dinner table might make him feel special. Usually Kevin and I talk and Brian feels the need to join in. Can't believe we didn't realise we weren't including him as we should.

And that pizza - looks just like the ones my family used to make. Yum!
