My Creative Space

In my creative space today there has been a little bit of activity going on, I'm hoping it's the start of more, this is just the first of many handmade Christmas gifts I would like to make.  Yesterday I cut out a little pinafore for my niece, it's yet to be sewn but I don't think it will take long it's soooo tiny. I've made this pinafore before and it was well loved so I'm hoping this one will be too.

Tomorrow at school it's 'Pirate Day', they get to dress up as pirates and donate a gold coin to a worthy cause.   At first I was daunted and I have to say with it also being the last day, well a bit tired too. But I went searching in on the internet for ideas and then through her draws to see what we could come up with so we didn't have to spend a fortune for just one day and then the ideas started to come to me.  In her draws she already had a top, shirt and leggings and to finish off her outfit I sewed up a little vest using felt and some leftover bias binding from her other dress up outfit, made an eye patch and a hook for her hand and the ribbon is for her waist and to use around her head, pirate outfit complete!  I have to say best of all it meets with happy approval too, Miss 8 is always very sweet with whatever I make for her, mostly......

Finished

Today I finally finished my crochet slippers.  I'm not sure why I procrastinated quite so much because it was a simple pattern to follow, maybe that means I can make more for me..... I suppose it really means it's time for me to get to it and crochet up my girls their slippers now.

Felt Ball Garland

I find it's often nice when you're got a big project on the go, like the crochet blanket I'm working on, to have fun doing a simple craft with more immediate results.  I have admired many felt garlands and really wanted to try some felting for myself.  So after dropping off the girls at school I headed to the craft shop to buy myself some wool roving to make my felt balls.
I followed this tutorial and after a short time I had myself ten felted balls ready to make myself a little garland.  Once they were dry I used some natural twine and threaded on the balls creating a little loop at each end for hanging.  I'm not sure if I will keep it small or make some more but I sure did have fun making it and looking at it hanging in my office.

there has been more pj sewing.  I hope you don't get too bored seeing another set, it seems to be the present of the month here at the moment.  This cute little set of pjs made out of some train fabric I bought today will be given to my little nephew who's turning a 2 this weekend!  I think I might just have to go on the list when it comes to pj making, it's getting pretty chilly around here.

This week I've been trying to organise a few little gifts for Easter.  I got the inspiration for this idea here and thought that moulding fimo could be an alternative option.  So I drew myself a template cut them out and baked them, but they were too big on the my models ears so this was my second attempt at getting the size right.  It was more fiddly than I had thought they would be and difficult to get exactly the same but you know that they have been handmade and are all unique that's what I tell myself anyway.

At  Miss 8's new school it seems the done thing is to give every child in the class an egg for Easter.  I have to say I'm a bit concerned about how much chocolate will be coming home with her on Friday.  It's hard because I really don't want to go along with the crowd but I know that Miss 8 would like to give something to her friends.  So I thought along different lines and bought a packet of organic lollipops and decorated them for her to hand out.  I know they are still full of sugar but I'd rather her hand them out than some of the yukky chocolate I know she'll end up getting. I found the inspiration here for the lollipop covers.

I've been busy creating a gift for my garden loving friend.  When I first saw these spoons ages ago on Cathie's blog I made a mental note to give them a try one day.  So when I picked up this bunch of cutlery at an op shop the other week I knew they would make the perfect markers.  I found this tutorial helpful when making the markers if you wanted to give them a try for yourself.  My tip would be to put an old towel under the spoon when stamping the spoon, it helped to keep the spoon from slipping and just go slowly those letters are only small and move a lot too.
The finished spoons all wrapped up in twine with some seed packets.

today is some bunting I made on the weekend for my craft room.  I've been meaning to make some for a while and just last weekend I got some uninterrupted time to myself, it was just what I needed to make me smile.  I used a combination of vintage fabrics and some linen I had left over from cutting out a bag for myself which is still sitting there waiting for me to make hopefully soon, once the birthdays for this month are out of the way.

today there has been some bib making. I made some for my friend as a baby shower gift and she loved them so much she asked me to make some more for her.  She chose the material,  I used some of the soft bamboo fabric I had left over and sewed them up for her just in time to hand over tonight before she leaves for southern lands.  I used this great tutorial over at Purl Bee for these bibs.

this week I've been busy with birthday making.  There has been some card making of the wonky kind, I'm a bit out of practice.

And at the last minute, still not quite organised yet this year, I made a bag for Miss 8 for her birthday.

today is the finished marble bags,  some gifts for boys for Christmas.  I was going to add to the gift a joke book too for each boy, appropriate for boys 7-9 years I think.  The bags ended up measuring approximately 15cm square and I used the tutorial on The Purl Bee as a guide for making the bag.

In my creative space

I have been sewing up a few of these little needle books.  I got the idea when I flicking through my craft book Sew Darn Cute and thought one of them would make a great gift for my crafty sister in law.  With Christmas coming up I made a couple more,  it's good to have gifts on hand just in case.
The next on my list  of things to do is a few marble bags for boy gifts, hopefully they aren't too old fashioned but I really don't want to buy something that looks cheap and is added to the pile of Christmas gifts.

I made a start on the Poppy doll today for my niece's birthday party on Sunday.  I've been taking things very slowly with this project,  I find softies a bit of challenge. I love a challenge, to learn new things and to give handmade when I can but making this doll will be a special one off gift so I'll keep going and have fun along the way I'm sure.

Her Creative Space

My older daughter is having a buddy picnic at school tomorrow and she needs to take a plate of food along to share.  She loves to cook so tonight she made some honey joys.  I imagine they'll be a big hit, they sure are in our house.  Here's the recipe she used.

85g of butter
⅓ cup of sugar
1 tbsp of honey
4 cups of cornflakes

Preheat oven on a slow temperature 140℃ to 150℃.  Place the first 3 ingredients into a saucepan and melt until bubbly.  Remove from heat and stir into bowl with cornflakes.  Spoon mixture into patty cases.  Bake in the oven for 10 minutes.
