My Creative Space

In my creative space today is a pinafore dress I made for a little girl who turned one last month.  It wasn't hard but for some reason each time I go to make something new I procrastinate so much that things arrive late.  Do you do that?  I think I need to just get in there and make or do a sewing class, high school was a long time ago.

I was wondering if I could ask for your advice?  I'm trying to be organised and next week my nephew turns one and I don't know what to make him.  Do you have any good ideas for little boy gifts?  I would appreciate any suggestions:)

For more inspiration stop by Kirsty's.

  1. Do you Amigurumi?? My lovely friend has 2 patterns for cute little monsters. My attempt was pathetic! You can find here at http://emmavarnam.co.uk/ and the patterns are in her list. Just use felt instead of buttons for eyes.
    Good luck!

  2. The little dress is beautiful Catherine. I just adore homemade kids clothes..so much love goes into them :) Sorry I haven't much experience with little boys and sewing (I didn't sew until my son was older). I think there was a 90 minute shirt pattern online. I did some shorts and a pencil case for my nephew.

  3. Sweet Dress! I like the suggestion above of a crocheted monster. Or maybe a car shaped felt wallet to store crayons in..or a library bag with drawstring top for him to keep cars or duplo lego in. I have no links for patterns to give you sorry - just remembering things as I type! I think Kate from Another Donkey Design made some kind of bag for her little boy for his cars - maybe check her blog?

  5. Hi Catherine - that dress is super sweet. I made my son a really easy drawstring bag for his wooden train set (it had so many pieces they were never in one place). I think a little tote or drawstring bag would be great and maybe personalise it with their name on the front - at that age they love putting things in things and then taking them out again.

  8. Cute dress Catherine! There are plenty of ideas for little boys!! I knitted a set of balls for my neighbour; I followed this pattern; http://www.woolworks.org/patterns/yarnball.txt
They are great for little hands to grip! Also with winter approaching they are a great indoor play idea.

    There are more knitted toy patterns here;

I have seen patterns on the internet for crochet blocks and dice, google is always helpful!

Other ideas- fabric building blocks, bean bags, toy car cosy, or an appliqued t-shirt.

I hope this helps. Have fun!!

  9. I've been making fabric blocks for all the littlies I know lately (including my own) - they're quick and easy, stuffed with polyfil, and the kids just love them because they're light, easy to pick up and throw around, stack up. Put some bells in the middle for extra fun when the block tower falls. I usually make a set of three, all in different sizes.

    BTW, love the dress!!

  10. Gorgeous dress Catherine! Little boys are a bit harder to make for aren't they? What about a little boy bag, something to put his things in or a simple pair of elastic waist pants with some funky cuffs and pockets? I really have no idea....!

  11. I made pencil rolls last year for some of my friends kids. The girls ones were made with bright fun flowery fabrics and I got some great construction fabric for the boys. I made the pencil rolls with different combinations of crayons/pencils/texters depending on the age group.

My son got a dinosaur fabric drawstring bag as a going home gift from a party 3 years ago and still loves it. He has kept different things in it over the years and it is now his marble bag!

  12. I love the dress so much Catherine!
For some reason it looks like something my Mum dressed us in. Gorgeous. And sorry but I'm no help with the boy thing either.

  13. What a cute pinafore - I'd love to make some of these for Grace for winter to wear over tights and a long sleeve top.

As for boys' presents... that's a tricky one... I like the library bag suggestion above.

  14. The dress is so cute. I'm on the very simple patterns at the moment but would love to make this. For a boy, I've just made Sam some bookends from Lotta Jansdotter book. They're shaped like a little monster filled with rice and stuffing. They've actually turned out to be used as throwing around. Bella loves that she throws them and it lands upright. They were quick and easy to make. x

  15. such a sweet dress, love the polka dots. How about a boyey cushion to put on his bed, or an Apron with boy type fabric and maybe his initial on it or how about a canvas with different boy type fabrics spelling his name with hand stitched embroidery around the edges of the letters. The bag is always a great idea!

  16. Hello thank for your nice comments. My son is now 15 months and since one yr of age he has been obsessed with balls, knocking down blocks and putting things into bags and taking them out again. Also he is very rough with his pants and dark collars are a must. I'm not a sewer (yet) but I hope this helps.

  17. Adorable little dress. As for boys something you can store things in like a pencil case, something to hang on the door. A hat, a smock, a pillow case, a polar fleece blanket with applique on it for the the couch. Hope this helps. Charmaine.

  19. The dress is gorgeous. My hubby and I are both procrastinators - we work better under the pressure of lateness!

Hats with full wide brims are a good little person gift. They are often hard to find in stores. And the car track you made a while back is good, train versions are great too. A crayon roll that includes space for a notebook to keep him occupied when out and about. A basic pair of cotton shorts are always handy. Hope that helps a bit.

  20. what about a little tippee tent kind of thing. my kids loved playing in their 'tent' (which i got from Ikea a v long time ago). my boy always had and still does have a special pillow case. Toy Story fabric or whatever the little guy is into. We also were very big on jigsaw puzzles. I reckon i could still do that Thomas the tank engine puzzle with my eyes closed!!!! good luck! Jane
