I made some jam yesterday!

My oldest daughter is big on cooking, she'd bake everyday I'm sure if she had the chance.  She loves to cook and collect recipes so much that as a Christmas gift she was given a food magazine subscription by her Grandma, the perfect pressie for her followed by clothes of course. Lucky for me she's more than happy to share and I too get to enjoy flicking through and discovering new recipes, including peach jam. My local organic shop had some cheap peaches for sale more suitable for jam making than eating so with a new recipe to try out I thought I would make some jam. After bottling the jam I processed it and it worked which I was pretty excited about. I now I have five jars of jam sitting in the pantry I think I'll be on the look out for more cheap fruit to make some again soon but I might invest in some jam making tools just the make it a little less messy next time.  Have you made any jam lately?

  1. Oh isn't jam making so satisfying? i made whiskey marmalade and peach chutney over chrissy. i failed in the post-processing part though- how did you do it? i tried to cover the filled jars with water in a big pot, and bring to the boil, but the lids kept popping off! I was recycling baby food jars, though, so maybe that's why. the best gift is a jar of something nice (in my opinion). happy days! :)sarah

  3. I make alot of pear jam as my kids are both salicylate intolerant and can't eat any fruit other than pears and bananas ( hence the lack of recipes on my blog). I find it really easy and quick but also as we refrigerate ours I don't bother with all the sterilising. One batch lasts a month or so in the fridge and all gets eaten. Peach jam sounds like heaven. mel x

My last batch of jam was blueberry and that was well over a year ao now. I will add jam making to the list for 2013.

  8. the last jam i made was a HUGE pot of apricot. the first bottle i filled tipped and poured all over a tea towel, the side of the stove and the floor. MESSY! haven't done any since- instead frequent the local cwa ladies sales. they have it mastered and i am happy to buy their's! looks delicious, hopefully you will continue the preserve journey! xx

  14. I've never tried to make jam myself before but had wanted to make some sweet little jars as party favours last year for my Pink Ribbon Fundraiser - only I ended up not going ahead with it and so have yet to try any recipes. Peach jam sounds delicious! What a great gift idea for your big girl with the cooking magazine subscription! x

  15. I think a bottling funnel is essential and not very expensive. I'm so funny with jam though - to me it has to be berry. Mind you, as a child my mum made a lot of apple and crab apple jellies - DELICIOUS!

  16. I did! Using apricots from our trees. I waiting for our peaches to ripen as I'm keen to bottle them. I have a great recipe for Marmajam which I'm keen to try too.
