Chickpeas

I went to do my grocery shopping the other day and needed some chickpeas but when I saw how much a can of organic chickpeas was I thought it was time I tried making them myself.  I asked the ladies at the organic shop what I needed to do to dried chickpeas to make them ready to use and since the process seemed simple enough and the price a lot better I thought I'd give it a try.  These are the steps I followed.
1. Place dried chickpeas in a glass dish and cover generously with water.  Soak overnight.
2. Drain and rinse chickpeas.
3. Place chickpeas in a saucepan and cover with water twice the amount of the chickpeas.
4. Cover the saucepan and simmer for approximately and hour or until chickpeas are tender.
5. Drain, cool and use.

Note: 1 cup of dried beans yields approximately 2 cups of cooked beans.

So what am I going to do with all of my chickpeas, I'm going to try making falafel, with some mountain bread and a side of tabouli couscous.

What are you having for dinner tonight?

  1. I only recently discovered this too after always opting for the comparatively expensive can. But all it really takes is a forethought. We've been enjoying ours in soups lately.

Yay to discovering the ease of doing these yourself. My grandmother always used dried beans etc so I learnt from a young age to soak over night before cooking.
Home made falafel are so simple and delicious and something we have not had in quite some time. Tabouli is also a firm favourite.
Dinner will be a simple affair here until the shops are restocked, most likely soup with homemade bread...I cannot believe how empty they are after the storms.

  6. I love chickpeas and think they are much nicer when you soak and cook them yourself. If you cook too many you can freeze them.

  7. i do love chickpeas, but never get around to cooking them at home as I'm the only one who likes them. Hope the falafel was good and I bet a lot different to the mixture you buy in a box. Dinner last night was take away pizza of course, footy night, not that i'm a big fan but it's easy and relaxed, and Dominos have really improved! Jx
